Description
The course “Tools for Wetland Assessment” introduces participants to a range of tools currently available to conduct or review wetland assessments. This course is aimed at professional ecologists and practitioners who want to move into the field of wetland ecology or hone their application of wetland assessment tools. This course is an NQF- level 8 course and is run as a postgraduate short course in partnership with Rhodes University. As such, the minimum requirement is the possession of a degree or diploma.
The major aspects covered in the course include:
- Assessment of wetland integrity using the WET-Health (Version 2) tool.
- Assessment of wetland ecosystem services using the WET-EcoServices (Version 2) tool.
- An introduction to the process of wetland delineation.
- An introduction to other tools (e.g., buffer guidelines, offset guidelines).
The TWA course is a collaborative educational experience with input from leading wetland scientists and practitioners in South Africa. The facilitators include Professor Fred Ellery from Rhodes University, Ryan Edwards of Verdant Environmental, and Steven Ellery from GroundTruth.
Course attendance details:
- In-person and remote/virtual options of attendance are available.
- Regional fieldtrip in Pietermaritzburg, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, with options in Johannesburg, Gauteng, or Cape Town, Western Cape, South Africa available dependant on demand.
- Worth 5 SACNASP CPD points.
Cost: R12 000.00 – Option to assess a wetland of your choice (and not the wetland visited during the fieldtrip) carries an additional R1000.00 charge.
