The “Introduction to Wetland Assessments” course aims to equip young professionals and emerging ecologists with fundamental concepts and principles of wetland ecology.
The course will cover the essential basic principles of:
- The drivers of wetland ecological condition (e.g., hydrology, geomorphology, water quality, and vegetation);
- Wetland identification and classification;
- Wetland ecosystem services;
- Available wetland ecological condition assessment tools (the WET-Health and miniWET-Health citizen science tool);
- A brief introduction to wetland rehabilitation concepts;
- GIS skills for Wetland Assessments (using QGIS).
The course is designed to develop practical skills that allow participants to build their fundamental understanding of wetland processes and to introduce them to the initial steps of wetland assessments. The range of knowledge, practical activities, and skills covered is designed to be varied. Lectures will be conducted by a team of experienced “Wetlanders” in-person, with access to online content for revision.

This course is being offered both in-person or through virtual attendance. The course has been designed to allow for either type of participation, allowing all attendees to interact with the course presenter/s.
- Option A: Attend only the 2-day virtual course from your place of choice (a reliable internet connection is a prerequisite). COST R5500.00
- OPTION B: Attend the 3-day course in-person at the GroundTruth offices in Hilton, KZN (limited to 20 people), which includes the in-field practical day. COST R5900.00
